Stone of the Month: Selenite

Always very popular within the metaphysical community, Selenite is an hydrous calcium sulfate mineral with a hardness of 2 in the Mohs scale. With a tubular or columnar crystal formation, this variety of the mineral Gypsum is mostly known for it distinctive striations running along its length. Selenite can be mainly found in dry, desert like areas as Australia, Greece, Mexico, Morocco and Brazil, where they form in clay beds beneath the surface around hot springs. Because Selenite usually grows in conjunction with other minerals like copper, silver, coal, calcite and opal, the typical colors of this stone range from colorless and white to green, gold and orange.

The name Selenite comes from the Greek word for moon, ‘selenites’; name given to this stone because of its moon-like color. Even though this stone has been around since ancient times, its softness made it hard for any real use to be found, so its main purpose has been served amongst the metaphysical community. Known as one of the most powerful energy cleanser crystals by reiki and crystal healers, Selenite is believed to be linked specifically to the Crown Chakra, but because of it’s ability to cleanse the auric field and clear blockages, it can be used for bringing balance to any of the chakras. Highly recommended for helping to bring clarity of mind and removing negative vibrations, Selenite is a great centerpiece for grids as it helps pull in and collect energy from other sources. Physically it can help ease headaches and relieve anxiety and stress.
